We had a session in Drew’s apartment and he played us the beginning of the track that eventually became ‘Don’t Let Me Down.’ We had a brief conversation about not over thinking anything and Drew was the one who was quickly like, don’t mess with that chorus, that’s it! Me and Emily had just come back from Coachella and were talking about writing a song that could make people really feel something at a festival. She had done a song with The Chainsmokers and was basically like, we HAVE to work with them. We just get each other and it’s a really comfortable environment when we are together. Scott Harris who co-wrote the song with Andrew Taggart and Emily Warren talked to Songwriter Universe how the collaboration came about, he said: “”Emily and I write together all the time, I’ve written more songs with her than anybody else by a lot. We had a performance on Good Morning America that day. Coachella was one of the greatest experiences of my life, being on stage with them for that. I’m seeing you guys more than I see my own family or my mom.” It was fun to meet up with them on the road. Literally, at one point it, was every two days.
She was like “Who are these Chainsmokers guys? They sound pretty sketchy.” But she ended up meeting them and loving them and everything so, it all worked out.ĭaya then added how she and the Chainsmokers interacted while this song climbed the charts, she said: “It was funny because when it was climbing, the Chainsmokers and I were doing the same radio shows, so we would cross paths every once in a while. I was really proud of the way that it turned out. We went into the studio together and they told me that mine is the one they wanted to use. Then I went to one of their shows and got to meet them and then it went from there. They just reached out to me, and I think they reached out to a bunch of different people, but I really, really loved and fell in love with this song. They had heard of me through Sony, because we’re both associated with them. It wasn’t even on the charts or anything yet. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Daya explained how she hooked up with The Chainsmokers, she said: “They reached out to me last year. It’s so crazy and cool that it’s actually been played in settings like that.” So when we were on our way to the session, we were like, “It’d be so sick if we could channel that feeling and make a song that would be comforting to hear if you were in that situation at Coachella.” That’s kind of what the song is about. Everyone’s a zombie, you’re probably a little fucked up, it’s hard to find your way around and you feel like you’re never going to see anyone again. So when we were on our way to a session with Drew, we were brainstorming what we could write about and we were talking about – all of us had gotten separated at one point or another, and being separated from people at Coachella is really scary. According to Emily Warren, one of the song writers, this is what the song is about: “Scott and I were at Coachella a couple of months before we wrote the song, and we had seen a bunch of EDM acts play.
